On the first single from her upcoming debut EP, Connecticut singer Anne Collin shows she knows how to make an entrance. Titled “I Wanna Be Bold,” the track combines cabaret vocals and minimalist electronic production with an unapologetic amuse-bouche of Collin’s artistic personality.

“The song came from wanting to resist the idea that women need to shrink themselves to fit expectations of how a ‘lady’ is supposed to behave,” she says. “I have always been a person who has a lot of emotions and I’ve struggled at times with wanting to push them down and cut them off to make myself more palatable. After a while, I figured out that I’m not too much for the right people, so ‘I Want to Be Bold’ is about falling in love with me and celebrating being extra.”

At the same time, the song’s instrumental is anything but; producer Kelsey Warren (of NYC band Blak Emoji) keeps things tastefully sparse with humming synth bass and a beat that has no qualms about spreading out and moving at its own pace. As an actress, Collin is no stranger to performance, but making a debut EP can be daunting to anyone–she cites Warren’s influence as a major factor in enabling her work.

“I can’t believe I am releasing my first EP, and I don’t know how I would have ever made it happen without Kelsey. His creative input, recording expertise, and general knowledge of this business far surpasses anything I could have brought about on my own.”
